Mayville Gardening Club - Islington,London

The Mayville Gardening Club was formed following the renovation of the community garden (North) on the Mayville Estate with support from Islington Council regeneration budget (www.islington.gov.uk/environment) and the Groundwork team (www.london.groundwork.org.uk). The area now forms part of the ‘green corridor’ from Cliss old Park, down Green Lanes, Newington Green, Mildmay Road, to King Henry’s Walk Gardens (www.khwgarden.org.uk).

The ‘green corridor’ is a move to enhance the number of trees, wildflower planting, water to increase the number of insects and wildlife in the area and part of WING (Wildlife in Newington Green, www.newingtongreen.org.uk). It incorporates Newington Green Primary School, the historic Newington Green and the surrounding conservation area.

The Mayville Gardening Club operates within the Mayville Estate and work in partnership with Homes for Islington (www.homesforislington.org.uk) to improve the environment and utilize abandoned, neglected and ignored green spaces within the estate. It offers local residents opportunities to have a small allotment and/or learn about aspects of gardening (with a new food project which has begun), insect and wildlife improvement.

The Mayville Community Centre where members can meet is undergoing renovation to Passivhaus standard over the next year (www.mildmaycp.org.uk/redevelopment), but the Club will continue to meet in the community gardens.

We work within Islington’s Green Communities Model.
